Jesus, You're the Sweetest Thing I Know - Song Insight

written 2004 MP3 RA WMP

This song is of a relationship with Jesus (and thus, with Father God also). A relationship with Jesus can be our lifestyle. We and Jesus can be friends. Day, night, all the time. Just like He's sitting on you're shoulder. Laughing when you laugh, crying when you cry, working when you work, playing when you play. Not just something we talk about or talk to, but an actual real life full time best friends. We can know God deeply. We can be so close that everything we do is done together. We can attain the place where our relationship with Jesus is like Jesus' relationship with the Father when He said to Philip...

John 14:9b-10 Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works."
Imagine saying that to someone. It can be true. We can say that same thing about our relationship with Jesus. It is possible. Why would Jesus have told us to Abide in Him if we couldn't. We can live in Him, and He in us, just like Jesus and the Father. Read John 15:1-11 It is an excellent description of this true life experience.

Although this song may have some lines that sound like common phrases, don't let that make you think they have a shallow meaning to me. Like... "Jesus, You're the sweetest thing I know", that means just what it says. I love Jesus! It says "thing" because there are many things that people like to spend time with to make them happy. But you know who tops them all??? JESUS!!!

And then we have "You're soft voice singing melts my longing soul." This is kind of a personal thing of Jesus singing through me. It reminds me of where Jesus says in John 15 "If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you". This is truly where I find help, and healing in my music, when Jesus is singing through me. I can feel His presence keeping me going and making a difference. Bringing healing to hurting hearts. Comforting and calming the worried. Bringing hope and freedom to the discouraged. Yes Jesus, let it run and let it flow.

"Jesus, whisper words and speak them sweet to me." I need and want to learn from Jesus. "Open eyes and let the blind man see." Again, this is a personal application. I want to have more and more of my blindness removed and see more and more of His blessed freedom. More and more of His blessed righteousness lived out in my life. More and more of His words abiding in me. Although there are many means by which Jesus teaches us, the one I was mainly thinking of when this song was written was through His Body. As described in 1 Corinthians 12 we learn from Jesus' Body, other believers.

And the last line... "You're the purest thing to me." To live in the purity of the Lord is just wonderful, joyful, full of light, and FUN!

For those of you who are skeptical read John 15:1-11, why would He commanded "Abide in me" if it's not possible. However, I do not hold that we should claim we are totally abiding all the time in Jesus. Since...
1Jo 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
